The HHS Office of Inspector General is looking for increased funding next year as well, and its giving home health and hospice fraud as a good reason for it. In the Biden administration’s 2025 budget, the OIG notes that its “work facilitated progress on critical issues, such as … reducing Medicare spending on home health providers in geographic fraud hotspots by nearly 12 percent,” according to an OIG release. “OIG ensures that … people who depend on HHS programs are protected from grievous harms such as … substandard nursing home and hospice care,” the OIG adds. And “using advanced analytics, we conduct risk assessments to identify emerging issues and provide meaningful oversight in key areas” including hospice, the watchdog agency maintains.
