Industry Notes:

IMPACT Law To Bring Data Changes As Well As More Frequent Hospice Surveys

Watch for efforts to standardize the patient data you collect across post-acute care settings, now that the Improving Medicare Post-Acute Care Transformation Act of 2014 has become law. President Obama signed the legislation Oct. 6.

The IMPACT law also requires hospice surveys every three years. That’s welcomed by many in the industry. “A lot of things can go wrong when no one’s looking,” J. Donald Schumacher of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organi-zation tells the New York Times.

The IMPACT law also allows for medical review of hospices with a high proportion of long-stay patients. Medicare hasn’t yet set the threshold that would trigger a review, but administrators are talking about a 40 percent to 60 percent range, reports the Times.
