Hospice Aiming To Serve Minority Population Strikes Out On CON

Data shows minority patients are often underserved by hospice, but a chance for North Carolina to help rectify that situation is going to waste.

So says Heart’n Soul Hospice, which was recently turned down by the state for a certificate of need covering the Charlotte area. Heart’n Soul owners in Nashville “made it clear they are Black and intend to serve everyone but will focus on African Americans, who are currently underserved,” says the U.S. News & World Report. The company has locations in Nashville, Tenn., and Seattle, Wash., which are both CON states.

With nine hospices currently operating in Charlotte, the state says it doesn’t need more. But “there continues to be many minority residents, particularly those over the age of 65 who are more likely to require end of life care and that have endured decades of inequality, resulting in a lack of trust of medical institutions that makes it particularly challenging to gain acceptance to deliver care in their home,” noted Mecklenburg County manager Dena Diorio in a support letter for the application, reports WCNC.
