If you’re feeling the heat of state fraud scrutiny, you are not alone. Home health agencies had the third-most open fraud investigations with Medicaid Fraud Control Units in 2020 at 804, the HHS Office of Inspector General says in a new report about MFCU activity in 2020. The only medical service providers with more open investigations were drug manufacturers (2,851) and retail pharmacies (1,231), the OIG says. On the hospice side, MFCUs have 76 open investigations against hospices for fraud and three for patient abuse or neglect, reveals the report.
Cha-ching: MFCUs secured 21 HHA convictions in 2020 producing $4.9 million in recoveries, the OIG says. More financially rewarding were the nine civil judgments and settlements with HHAs that produced $15.2 million in recoveries, according to the government watchdog. MFCUs recorded two hospice convictions with about $347,000 in recoveries and two civil judgments/settlements with $1.3 million in recoveries, according to the 34-page report at www.oig.hhs.gov/oei/reports/OEI-09-21-00120.pdf.
