More than 15 months after pleading guilty to Medicare fraud, a Houston home health agency owner has been sentenced to prison. Akintunde Oyewale operated Grace Healthcare Services through September 2017, the Department of Justice notes in a release. Oyewale admitted to causing Grace to bill Medicare for home health services that were not medically necessary and not provided; paying medical clinics illegal kickbacks for fraudulent home health certifications and patient referrals; and failing to keep required documentation.
“Oyewale admitted to using the fraudulently obtained funds for his personal financial benefit and for the benefit of his family members,” the DOJ says. A federal judge sentenced Oyewale to serve 57 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release. He also agreed to repay nearly $1.5 million in restitution to Medicare, the DOJ says.
