Don’t assume you needn’t worry about hackers because you’re not a big organization. That’s a lesson learned the hard way by Trinity Home Care Inc. in Chicopee, Massachusetts. On Feb. 1, hackers were able to access records on a computer hard drive that contained patients’ first and last names, Medicare ID numbers, and insurance information, according to press reports. Records affected in the breach also had social security numbers for a portion of patients. “Unfortunately, health care providers are a common target for cybercriminals,” Trinity President Peggy Sugrue told news station WWLP. Trinity Home Care will offer free credit monitoring for patients whose SSNs were accessed.
