Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius applauded HHS's stepped-up fraud fighting tactics in her year-end summary of the department's 2010 accomplishments. HHS and the Department of Justice's "joint efforts have resulted in over 500 defendants being charged with defrauding Medicare out of more than $1 billion," Sebelius touted. "Billions have been returned to the Medicare Trust Funds thanks to stepped up efforts by HHS and DOJ." Health care providers can expect only more fraud scrutiny in the future, experts say.
