Hawaii Becomes Latest PHE Location
Keep tabs on the developing situation. The COVID-19 public health emergency may be over, but other emergencies continue to spawn new declarations. On Aug. 11, Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra “determined that a Public Health Emergency exists in the State of Hawaii due to the wildfires beginning on August 8, 2023, and continuing,” the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services notes. CMS, in turn, announced on Aug. 12 “additional resources and flexibilities available in response to the recent wildfires in the State of Hawaii.” Resources for this PHE, including a link to an application for a waiver, are at www.cms.gov/about-cms/agency-information/emergency/epro/current-emergencies/current-emergencies-page.
