Industry Notes:

Update Your CBSA Codes For Transition Year Or Face Returned Claims

Your claims with outdated CBSA codes may be slipping by now, but soon they’ll come back to haunt you.

Due to the wage index transition this year, home health agencies “may serve beneficiaries in areas where there is more than one unique Core-Based Statistical Area (CBSA),” Palmetto says on its website. “In these cases, HHAs should use special CBSA codes in the range 50xxx on their claims.”

If not: Claims without updated CBSA codes will pay incorrectly with 2014 wage index values, Palmetto explains. “Soon, 2015 claims with invalid CBSA codes will be returned to the pro-vider,” the MAC warns.

Do this: It’s not enough to fix the problem going forward, Palmetto says. “HHAs should adjust any claims previously paid incorrectly,” the MAC instructs.
