Industry Notes:

Fake Home Health Nurse To Serve 18 Months, Repay $50K

Watch out for home health nurse imposters. One who pleaded guilty in Texas has been brought to justice.

Nora Nely Avila “admitted that from January 2017 through December 2019, she impersonated a nurse and performed unlicensed work at multiple hospitals and home health companies in the Laredo area,” the Department of Justice says in a release. “Avila stole the identity of a licensed nurse and repeatedly and fraudulently presented the license and credentials of this licensed nurse at federally funded Medicare and Medicaid providers,” it says.

Avila incorrectly took out stitches from a patient’s wound, leading to an infection, according to the release.

Plus: “At other home health agencies, Avila falsified patient records and failed to show up to work which left patients without needed care,” the DOJ adds.

A federal judge has ordered Avila to serve 18 months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release. The judge also entered a money judgement against Avila for more than $52,000.
