Industry Notes:

DOL Proposed Rule Could Cost You In Overtime

Watch out for how a new overtime law proposal could affect your compensation budget. The U.S. Department of Labor wants to raise the salary threshold for overtime exemptions from the current $23,660 to $50,440, it says in a July 6 proposed rule.

In 1975, 62 percent of full-time salaried workers, including a majority of college graduates, were eligible for OT, the White House notes in a release. Today 8 percent of full-time salaried workers fall below the current salary threshold.

The DOL also proposed automatic updates to the salary threshold. See links to the proposal and other materials at www.dol.gov/whd/overtime/NPRM2015. The DOL will accept comments on the rule until Sept. 4.
