Don’t expect an extension on your Sept. 30-fiscal-year-end cost report. Why? The last announced automatic COVID-related extension for filing cost reports was for reports for years ending Dec. 31, 2020, where the due date was bumped from May 31 to Aug. 2, 2021 (see HCW by AAPC, Vol. XXX, No. 3). The Nov. 30, 2021 deadline for cost report years ending in June of last year went through as scheduled. Cost reports for FYs ending Sept. 30, 2021, are due on Feb. 28, confirms HHH Medicare Administrative Contractor Palmetto GBA in a new post. Watch out: “When a cost report is filed late, the provider will be placed on payment hold,” Palmetto notes. But the hold doesn’t have a quick and easy resolution. “The payment hold will be released after the cost report has been received, reviewed and accepted,” the MAC points out. “Please file timely (or early) to prevent being placed on payment hold.”
