You have an extra four months to start using the updated Advance Beneficiary Notice form. Then: In June, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced the renewed ABN, Form CMS-R-131, would be required by Aug. 31, even though the old form expired on June 30 (see Eli’s HCW, Vol. XXIX, No. 24).
Now: “Due to COVID-19 concerns, CMS is going to expand the deadline for use of the renewed ABN,” CMS says in a message to providers. “The renewed ABN will be mandatory for use on 1/1/2021.” Providers may use the new form before that deadline if they wish, CMS adds. See the ABN form and instructions at www.cms.gov/Medicare/Medicare-General-Information/BNI/ABN.
