More than three months into the Biden administration during a global pandemic, the President’s nominee for Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator has yet to be confirmed. After a confirmation hearing for Chiquita Brooks- LaSure on April 15, the Senate Finance Committee “failed to report favorably” on her nomination on April 22 because the committee voted 14-14 along party lines. The “no” votes from Republican senators appeared to be in response to CMS’ revocation of Texas’ 1115 Medicaid waiver earlier in the week. What’s next: “Brooks-LaSure’s nomination, because it resulted in a tie, must be moved to the Senate floor via a discharge petition that will be filed by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York),” explains the Association of American Medical Colleges.
