If you think the bad-mouthing of for-profit hospices, and the reputational harm that may cause, is the worst that can happen, think again. In New York, a state bill from Sen. Liz Krueger and Assemblymember Amy Paulin would prohibit the establishment of new for-profit hospices in the state, according to local news reports. The bill has been passed by the state legislature before, but was vetoed by the governor, points out Jeanne Chirico with the Hospice & Palliative Care Association of NYS (HPCANYS). Watch for similar legislation to crop up in other states, observers predict.
