If you think nursing home staffing minimums won’t affect you, think again. A Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services proposed rule aims to establish minimum Registered Nurse and Nurse Aide hours per resident day (HPRD), but not Licensed Practical Nurses/Licensed Vocational Nurses minimums. That means nursing homes will need to hire more nurses and aides and may have to reduce the number of residents in their facilities, expects the National Association for Home Care & Hospice.
That could mean even more competition for staff, as well as consequences such as more hospice patients staying in their homes or in hospice facilities, the trade group theorizes. See the 78-page rule at www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/FR-2023-09-06/pdf/2023-18781.pdf.
