Automatic Cost Report Extensions For COVID Are A Thing Of The Past, MAC Stresses

Cost reports for fiscal years ending June 30, 2021, are due Nov. 30, and no blanket extension seems to be coming.

“When a cost report is filed late, the provider will be placed on payment hold,” warns HHH Medicare Administrative Contractor Palmetto GBA in a recent post about the deadline. “The payment hold will be released after the cost report has been received, reviewed and accepted. Please file timely (or early) to prevent being placed on payment hold,” the MAC requests.

There are “no more automatic extensions due to COVID-19,” stresses cost report vendor Progressive Provider Services on its website. The last announced automatic extension was for cost reports for years ending Dec. 31, 2020, where the due date was bumped from May 31 to Aug. 2 of this year (see HCW by AAPC, Vol. XXX, No. 3).

Looking ahead: ‘“We are already receiving calls regarding the potential extension of filing 2021 cost reports beyond the scheduled May 31, 2022, filing date,” reports consulting and cost report firm The Health Group in Morgantown, West Virginia. “No announcement has been made and we do not expect an announcement until Spring 2022, at the earliest,” The Health Group says in its electronic newsletter. “Any future extensions, as were experienced in 2020 and 2021, will be largely dependent on additional extensions of the COVID-19 PHE,” it says.
