Assess Your Market Carefully For Inpatient Hospice

One hospice is growing its inpatient business while another is shuttering it. The Center for Hospice Care Southeast Connecticut in Norwich is planning to open Hospice House, reports the Nor-wich Bulletin. The hospice hopes to open the 12-bed facility by 2017, the newspaper says.

“Given the choice and the way hospitals have to admit and discharge people now, all of the stars are aligning, so it just makes this Hospice House more urgent in our community,” said Hospice President and CEO Carol Mahier. “Home care is not always possible, and right now, the hospitals want people to get in and get out.”

Meanwhile, Hospice of Salina in Kansas is closing the Kaye Pogue Hospice Center operated by Salina Regional Health Center, reports the Wichita Business Journal. Low utilization and insufficient Medicare reimbursement are two reasons for the closure, according to the newspaper
