ACOs Save Medicare Big Bucks Year After Year

Whether you see ACOs as an opportunity or a hindrance — or both — they’re likely to be around for a while.

The Medicare Shared Savings Program, through Accountable Care Organizations, saved the Medicare program $1.6 billion in 2021 and “continues to deliver high-quality care,” the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services says in a release. “This marks the fifth consecutive year the program has generated overall savings and high-quality performance results,” CMS touts.

“The Medicare Shared Savings Program demonstrates how a coordinated care approach can improve quality and outcomes for people with Medicare while also reducing costs for the entire health system,” CMS Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure praises in the release.

“Just last month, we proposed ways to further grow and expand this successful program, especially in rural and underserved communities,” in the proposed physician fee schedule rule, HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra says in the release.

About 58 percent of participating ACOs earned payments for their performance in 2021, CMS says.
