Industry Note:

VNA Settles Fraud Charges For $5.25 Million

• A Connecticut VNA and its husbandand-wife owners have ponied up $5.25 million to settle Medicaid billing fraud charges. Stratfordbased Family Care Visiting Nurse and Home Care Agency, David Krett and RN Rita Krett have entered into a Corporate Integrity Agreement with the HHS Office of Inspector General, the Department of Justice says in a release.

“With the knowledge and at the direction of its owners,” Family Care VNA regularly billed S9123 codes for 60-day assessments when a registered nurse did not provide them as required by Medicaid, the DOJ alleges. The VNAalso submitted claims to Medicaid for dually eligible patients without first following required procedures for submitting claims to Medicare, Justice adds.

The settlement covers January 2009 through April 2016, the DOJ notes. The settlement comes after a three-year investigation by the state attorney general and an audit by the state’s Department of Social Services, reports the Courant newspaper.
