Poor behavior on the part of a nursing home chain has resulted in a boon for one hospice. A class action lawsuit brought on behalf of 32,000 residents of Skilled Healthcare nursing facilities resulted in a $677 million verdict against the nursing home chain, reports the Eureka, Calif., Times-Standard newspaper. The parties then settled the case before the jury heard evidence about punitive damages. Skilled Healthcare gave $300,000 of the settlement to Hospice of Humboldt, the newspaper reports. The hospice, which served more than 580 patients last year, will put the funds toward building an inpatient facility, it told the Times-Standard.
