Seek Accelerated Payments For Outlier Shortfalls

If Medicare's underpayment of outliers is killing your bottom line, you should consider appealing to your MAC for help. "CMS has authorized the Medicare contractors to advance 70 percent of the total [outlier] amount due to agencies that request an accelerated payment, and agreed to delay the repayment to that point in time when the outlier glitch is fixed," the National Association for Home Care & Hospice reports in its member newsletter.Due to claims system problems, many agencies remain underpaid for outliers for 2010, 2011, and 2012 (see related reader question, Eli's HCW, Vol. XXI, No. 15). NAHC is seeking data from providers on unpaid outliers to determine the scope of the problem.
