Security Gets Tougher For Medicare Systems

Medicare’s new requirement to use multifactor authentication (MFA) in the Identity and Access (I&A) system this month is just the start, HHH MAC National Government Services notes in a new message to providers.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services will require MFA in the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) in December, and the Provider Enrollment, Chain and Ownership System (PECOS) system next April, NGS says.

“MFA is a second layer of security used to access online systems,” NGS explains. “Using this second factor when logging in, helps prevent anyone other than the user from logging in.”
