Paper Records Still Pose HIPAA Threat, Breach Shows

Don’t focus all your HIPAA compliance efforts on electronic PHI. In a HIPAAbreach reported April 29 on the HHS Office for Civil Rights’ socalled “Wall of Shame,” where it displays all reported breaches affecting 500 or more individuals, a home care provider is listed with “Paper/Films” as the location of its breach. The incident by Pruitt-Health Home Health — Low Country in South Carolina affected 1,500 individuals, according to the listing for “Unauthorized Access/Disclosure.”
In fact, of the 26 total breaches reported in April, eight involved “paper/films,” the listing notes. To view the OCR’s breach list, go to https://ocrportal.hhs.gov/ocr/breach/breach_report.jsf.
