Industry Note:

OIG Work Plan Goes Relatively Easy On Home Care

Home health and hospice providers have a smaller than usual role in the HHS Office of Inspector General’s latest annual Work Plan.

For home health: The OIG lists “Home health prospective payment system requirements” as its sole HHA topic. The watchdog agency cites a “prior OIG report [that] found that one in four home health agencies (HHAs) had questionable billing.” And it highlights the “high-risk” status of newly enrolling agencies.

For hospice: The OIG lists “Hospice general inpatient care” as its sole hospice topic. “Hospice care is palliative rather than curative,” the OIG stresses. “When a beneficiary elects hospice care, the hospice agency assumes the responsibility for medical care related to the beneficiary’s terminal illness and related conditions.”

The OIG lists some Medicaid home health topics as well: adult day care and room and board costs. See the Work Plan at http://oig.hhs.gov/reports-and-publications/archives/workplan/2016/oig-work-plan-2016.pdf.
