OIG Wants Revalidating HHAs Classified As 'High Risk'

Home care providers are a target in the HHS Office of Inspector General's top challenges for the year. "There are additional opportunities for CMS to strengthen the enrollment system, including ... classifying reenrolling DME and home health providers as 'high risk,'" the OIG says in its annual summary of the most significant management and performance challenges facing the Department of Health and Human Services. Currently, only new HHA and durable medical equipment suppliers go into the high-risk group for screening procedures put into place in March 2011. High risk screening includes criminal background checks and fingerprinting. The report also highlights problems with the hospice industry. In a recent OIG audit, "for more than 60 percent of claims, hospices did not meet federal requirements for establishing adequate plans of care," says the report which is online at http://go.usa.gov/nLY.
