CMS is looking to collect more Medicaid overpayments, to the tune of more than $200 million. CMS has collected nearly $1 billion of overpayments identified in 147 HHS Office of Inspector General audit reports, but the OIG wants CMS to collect the rest of those overpayments, according to a report released on Feb. 20.
CMS has been working hard to collect these Medicaid overpayments since December 2012, but the OIG isn’t satisfied with the agency’s efforts. In the report, the OIG complained that CMS was too slow in collecting overpayments and couldn’t provide adequate documentation for $7.2 million worth of collected overpayments. CMS should better track the recoveries and finish collecting the $225.6 million of overpayments still outstanding, the OIG report states.
