OIG Points Finger At Hospice In Semiannual Report

Home health agencies aren't the only ones on the hook for low overpayment collection rates. The HHS Office of Inspector General takes hospices to task for the problem too in its latest semiannual report to Congress. The rate for home health agencies and hospices combined is only 11 percent, the OIG recently said (see Eli's HCW, Vol. XXVI, No. 44). That compares to an average 20 percent rate across all Medicare provider types.

The OIG also highlights a hospice-nursing home fraud example in the report. Genesis Health-care Inc., a nursing home company based in Cali-fornia, settled allegations of numerous misdeeds, including submitting hospice claims for ineligible patients.
