NYC HHAs Must Pay Back Nearly $70 Million

NYC HHAs must pay back nearly $70 million in improper Medicaid claims reimbursed from 2007 through 2009. Certified Home Health Agencies in New York City failed to review the plan of care every 60 days, along with other noncompliance issues, according to the HHS Office of Inspector General. The OIG is ordering the State of New York to pay back the estimated $69.1 million in erroneous reimbursement, and provide guidance to CHHAs on federal and state Medicaid requirements for plans of care. The catch: The OIG based the huge refund on a random sampling of just 100 claims from the CHHAs. About 83 of those claims were fully compliant, but 17 claims were not.
