The assistant director of nursing at a Detroit home health agency has received a three year prison sentence and an order to pay $1.6 million in restitution for a Medicare fraud scheme, the Department of Justice says in a release. Juan Yrorita pleaded guilty to charges related to the scheme last November, after four days of trial. As part of his guilty plea, Yrorita admitted that his co-conspirators at Anointed Care Services paid kickbacks to recruit Medicare beneficiaries and that he falsified medical records to support Anointed's fraudulent claims to Medicare for services that were medically unnecessary and never provided, the DOJ says. As for the other defendants in the case, Anointed owner Editha Manzano was convicted at trial and awaits sentencing; Liberty Jaramillo and physician Roberto Quizon pleaded guilty and are pending sentencing; and physician Victoria Gallardo-Navarra was acquitted.
