A former Michigan home health agency owner has been sentenced to seven years in federal prison after pleading guilty to an $8.3 million Medicare fraud scheme. Last May, Zahir Shah admitted to submitting false certifications to enroll and stay enrolled as a Medicare provider; paying illegal kickbacks to recruiters in exchange for Medicare beneficiary referrals; and billing Medicare for claims procured through these illegal kickbacks, as well as for claims for medically unnecessary services, according to the Department of Justice. Plus: “The court ordered that Shah repay as restitution the total amount that his home health agencies received from the Medicare program from 2007 to 2017, which was over $8.3 million,” the DOJ says in a release.
