Medicare Springs 4 New Nursing G Codes On HHAs

Learn new PPS billing rules.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has issued its marching orders for home health prospective payment system billing under changes that take effect Jan. 1 — and one addition is an unwelcome surprise.

In the new year, G0163 and G0164 will be retired, and replaced with four new G-codes: two for observation and assessment - G0493 (RN) and G0494 (LPN) - and two for training/education - G0495 (RN) and G0496 (LPN).

The National Association for Home Care & Hospice “is concerned with the short notice CMS has given providers to implement the new G codes,” it says. “CMS did not mention in the HHPPS final rule that it planned to require four new G codes related to skilled nursing services.”
