Industry Note:

Medicare Shows Its Zeal For Bundling Programs

Home care providers may have heaved a sigh of relief at the three-month delay to the Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement Model and Cardiac Rehabilitation Incentive Payment Model announced recently (see Eli’s HCW, Vol. XXVI, No. 20). But don’t expect the reprieve to last long.

“On the surface, Medicare’s announcement of an additional three-month delay in the implementation of mandatory bundles for hip fractures and cardiac episodes sounds like just another delay,” says Brian Ellsworth with the Health Dimensions Group consulting firm. “In fact, when you consider that they could have decided to shelve the rule altogether, it is the opposite. Providers in these mandatory bundling markets should interpret this as a strong signal by the new administration that these programs are a go,” Ellsworth says in analysis posted on the firm’s website.

“Ignore these signals at your own peril,” Ellsworth warns.
