On the heels of Medicare's Rural Health Strategy announcement (see Eli's HCW, Vol. XXVII, No. 18), the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services issued an interim final rule with comment period to increase the fee schedule rates from June 1, 2018, through Dec. 31, 2018, for certain durable medical equipment items and services and enteral nutrition furnished in rural and non-contiguous areas not subject to DME Competitive Bidding. The move "aims to protect access to needed durable medical equipment in rural and non-contiguous areas ... helping beneficiaries to maintain their health, mobility, and overall quality of life," CMS says in a release. Comments on the rule, published in the May 11 Federal Register at www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2018-05-11/pdf/2018-10084.pdf, are due July 9.
