Some new hospice statistics may surprise you. The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization has released its free NHPCO Facts and Figures report for 2022, which includes data from 2020. Utilization by state varies widely, with Utah recording the highest proportion of Medicare decedents using hospice (60.7 percent) and New York the lowest (24.7 percent), the report reveals. More expected is the length of stay data. Patients with neurological and stroke/CVA diagnoses had the longest average lifetime LOS (181 and 148 respectively), while neurological and respiratory had the longest median lifetime (56 and 40 respectively), NHPCO notes in the 21-page report at www.nhpco.org/hospice-care-overview/hospice-facts-figures.
