Hospitals Hang Out The Home Health, Hospice 'For Sale' Signs As Profit Margins Dwindle

Two more hospitals are shedding their home care units. Island Hospital in Annacortes, Wash., has sold its home health agency to Canyon Home Care & Hospice for $1.45 million, reports the Anacortes American. The agency, which has run at a loss for years, has about 18 employees and had a census of up to 100 patients, the newspaper says. Canyon, which operates 12 locations in Utah, Idaho, and Oregon, will take over in July.

And Memorial Community Hospital & Health System in Blair, Neb., is “in the process of negotiations with a potential partner to take over its home health and hospice services,” reports the Washington County Pilot Tribune & Enterprise. In 2016, the agency furnished about 6,025 home health visits and 913 hospice visits, the newspaper says — down about 25 percent from 2012 levels. The agency is running at a 0.5 percent margin.
