Industry Note:

Home Health Fraudster To Pay 2.2 Million

An Ohio HHA owner has pleaded guilty to Medicaid and tax fraud charges. Cheryl McGrath, owner of Home Health Care of Southeast Ohio in Guysville, has been sentenced to three years in prison and agreed to pay $2.2 million in restitution to the Ohio Medicaid Program and nearly $367,000 to the Internal Revenue Service, the Department of Justice says in a release.

From 2009 until 2015, McGrath defrauded Ohio Medicaid by billing on behalf of her agency for nursing services that were never rendered, routinely changing the claim information in the billing software to falsely reflect that additional hours of nursing services had been provided, and falsely increasing the number of nursing visits from one visit per week to between three and five visits per week. McGrath also submitted claims for Medicaid patients who were ineligible because they were either residing in private nursing homes or deceased.

"This scheme was intentional and egregious," Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine says in the release. "Fighting health care fraud is a priority of my office."
