Home Care Grapples With Another Disaster

HHS declares public health emergency in Florida.

Home care providers once more are putting their emergency preparedness plans into action in the face of a hurricane. At press time, Hurricane Michael had ravaged the Florida panhandle and was moving through the Southeast U.S.

Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar declared a public health emergency in Florida on Oct. 9, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services says in a release. “With the PHE in effect, CMS has taken several actions to provide immediate relief to those impacted by the hurricane,” the release notes. Those actions include suspending survey and enforcement activities for the affected areas.

Updated information will be added to www.cms.gov/About-CMS/Agency-Information/Emergency/EPRO/Current-Emergencies/Current-Emergencies-page.html as the situation develops.
