Is that person who shows up at your door, but isn’t a state surveyor, really entitled to tour your office, take photos, speak with staff, and more? Yes, if they are from Medicare’s National Site Visit contractor.
In 2011, CMS implemented a site visit verification program using a National Site Visit Contractor (NSVC), the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services says in a recent MLN Matters article. “The site visit verification program is a screening mechanism to prevent questionable providers and suppliers from enrolling or maintaining enrollment in the Medicare program.”
MSM Security Services has been CMS’s NSVC since 2011, the article explains. MSM and its subcontractors, Computer Evidence Specialists and Health Integrity, “are authorized by CMS to conduct the provider and supplier site visits. Inspectors performing the site visits will be employees of MSM, CES, or HI and shall possess a photo ID and a letter of authorization issued and signed by CMS that the provider or supplier may review.”
