The crackdown on home health fraud continues, and it's not being tempered for physicians involved in the cases. Ten Chicago-area individuals, including two HHA owners and three doctors, have been indicted in two alleged schemes where more than $1 million in kickbacks were paid in exchange for patient referrals.

Case #1: Maria Buendia and Nixon En-cinares, owners of Grand Home Health Care Inc. in Chicago, and seven other defendants allegedly engaged in a fraud scheme involving payment of more than $1.1 million in cash kickbacks to doctors, social workers, and a registered nurse, the Depart-ment of Justice says in a release. Those indicted include Dr. Farzana Begum, Dr. Fauzia Lodhi, Dr. Kamal Patel, nurse Elsa Montallana, social worker Georgina Colon, social worker David Troncoso, and social worker Tonya Snowden.

Case #2: Rogelio Cabrera, owner of Ro-myst Home Health Inc. in Chicago, was charged with paying a half million dollars in kickbacks to at least two physicians in exchange for referrals to Romyst, the DOJ says.
