It's not too late to celebrate Home Care & Hospice Month this month, or Home Care Aide Week Nov. 12-18. "Agencies and caregivers across the United States are raising awareness about the unique and irreplaceable value of health care delivered in the home," says the National Association for Home Care & Hospice in a release. "The people who work in home care are uniquely devoted to the health and well-being of their patients, a fact demonstrated by the 7.6 billion miles home care providers traveled in 2016 alone to provide quality care in the home." NAHC President William Dombi notes that "every day, nearly two million dedicated caregivers provide essential services to over 12 million vulnerable seniors, persons with disabilities, and children in their homes. We call upon all Americans to honor the power and value of home care and hospice and to applaud the hard work and sacrifice made by these caregivers every day across America." Even the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has marked the occasion. "Did you know that Medicare covers a wide range of health care services that can be provided in the home to treat an illness or injury for homebound beneficiaries who require skilled services?" CMS asks in a release commemorating the event. "In addition, hospice care empowers people with life-limiting illnesses to remain at home, surrounded and supported by family and loved ones. Talk to your Medicare patients about appropriate home care and hospice services."
