A Detroit-area pharmacy owner indicted in a massive drug fraud scheme also ran a home care fraud scheme on the side, a new indictment says.
Pharmacist Babubhai “Bob” Patel was convicted on controlled substance-related fraud charges and sentenced to 17 years in prison last summer, notes the FBI in a release. Now prosecutors have indicted Patel’s brother, Vinod Patel, who managed Bob Patel’s home health agency. “Vinod Patel, Babubhai Patel, and others bribed physicians and other referral sources for referrals to that home health agency and then billed the Medicare program for home health services that were medically unnecessary and never provided,” the FBI alleges.
