Industry Note:

D.C. HHA Owner Guilty

A former HHA owner in the nation’s capital has pled guilty to creating fake patient records.

When Jeannette N. Awasum of Tri State Home Health and Equipment Service found out the Department of Health and Human Services was going to audit plans of care for 130 patients, she knew Tri State lacked POCs for 62 of them, according to a statement of offense Awasum signed.

Awasum directed her employees to fraudulently create 81 POCs for the 62 patients, making it appear as if the documents had been created prior to their services being provided, the Department of Justice says in a release. Awasum had a staffer take the POCs to a physician who hadn’t examined the patients but signed the documents. Then Awasum had the employee file the POCs so they would be present for the audit.
