Industry Note:

CMS Survey Could Spark Changes To The Case-Mix System

Did you receive a survey on vulnerable beneficiaries? Pursuant to the Affordable Care Act, CMS is conducting a study on vulnerable beneficiaries, and is compiling data from two surveys: one for physicians, and one for home health agencies.

CMS mailed the surveys out to randomly selected HHAs in the beginning of February, according to Kristy Chu in a recent CMS Open Door Forum.

Good news: "The study is expected to lead to changes in the case-mix system and payment methodology for home health services," states NAHC in a Feb. 21 announcement. "The goal of the survey is to give stakeholders in the home health industry — as well as physicians — an opportunity to describe challenges faced in serving vulnerable populations and to provide the research team with firsthand data on issues that affect access to care."

CMS contracted with L&M Policy Research to conduct the study, and Social Scientific Systems mailed out the surveys to 1,075 HHAs and 510 referring physicians, NAHC says.
