Beware one more increased regulatory duty about to drop into your lap. In a proposed rule published in the Nov. 3 Federal Register, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services proposes new requirements for home health patients’ discharge summaries. CMS lists 22 items that would be required in the summary, including medication reconciliation and “patient’s goals and treatment preferences.” CMS also solicits feedback on a deadline for the discharge summary.
The new requirements would replace the discharge/transfer summary proposal included in the Conditions of Participation proposed rule published back in 2015, CMS notes in the rule. See the new COP discharge proposal at www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2015-11-03/pdf/2015-27840.pdf starting on p. 13 of the PDF file. Comments on the rule are due Jan. 4.
The rule also proposes discharge requirements for hospitals and other post-acute providers.
