Industry Note:

Certifying Physician Must Go On Claim

Are you out of compliance with a Medicare claims requirement to put two physicians on the claim? One HHH Medicare Administrative Contractor’s guidance may indicate you are.

Question: “Does the Certifying Physician in the Home Health agency record need to be reported on the claim?” one home health agency asked Palmetto GBA.

Answer: “Home Health Agencies are required to report on the claim the name and National Provider Identifier (NPI) of the physician who certifies/re-certifies the patient’s eligibility (Certifying Physician),” Palmetto explains on its website. “This is in addition to reporting the NPI and name of the physician who signs the patient’s plan of care (Attending Physicians) when the attending physician is not the same physician who certified/recertified the patient’s eligibility to receive services under the Medicare Home Health benefit.”
