Bay Area HHA Owner, Marketer Indicted On Kickback Charges — Plus Physician

A California home health agency marketer and referring physician have been indicted on Medicare fraud charges centering on kickbacks. Physician Jaime Cortes and marketer Lorena Gerasimov are accused of taking or making kickbacks with Medics Choice Home Health Care Inc. in Milpitas in 2015 and 2016, reports the Daily Republic newspaper. Medics Choice’s owner and other San Francisco area doctors were also indicted.

The kickbacks ranged from $250 to $700 per beneficiary, sometimes paid via a monthly amount of $2,000 to $3,500, according to court records. Medics Choice Home Health received more than $4 million from the referrals associated with kickbacks, prosecutors said.

Cortes allegedly took more than $9,000 in kickbacks for three referrals and Gerasimov allegedly arranged to pay out more than $9,200 to doctors for their referrals, according to the Republic.
