Industry Note:

2 HHAs Pay $10 Million To Settle Fraud Charges

Massachusetts’ ongoing crackdown on home health fraud has resulted in some big-dollar settlements. Two home care companies will pay more than $10 million to resolve allegations that they falsely billed MassHealth, the state’s Medicaid Program, Attorney General Maura Healey says in a release. Amigos Homecare in Lawrence will pay $2.1 million and Avenue Homecare Services Inc. in Dracut will pay $8.3 million to resolve allegations that both entities submitted false claims to MassHealth for home health services that had not been appropriately authorized by a physician.

Among the problems that investigators found were missing or invalid plans of care and claims for services when patients were actually in the hospital. “These civil settlements are part of a larger effort by AG Healey and MassHealth to combat fraud in the home health program,” the AG says.
