Hospice-nursing home interaction a top priority, watchdog agency says in new report. Home health agencies and hospices may have more regulatory red tape to wade through if the HHS Office of Inspector General gets its way. The OIG continues to beat the drum about certain HHA and hospice changes it desires in its Orange and Red Book compendium of unimplemented recommendations. For HHAs, the federal watchdog agency wants to see a physician exam of the patient required before ordering home care. And the OIG would like intermediate sanctions available for agencies that perform poorly on repeated surveys. For hospices, the OIG calls for improved oversight -- more frequent surveys, enforcement for poorly performing hospices, and more. And the agency wants CMS to monitor hospice claims for nursing home residents to ensure eligibility. The OIG also includes a raft of recommendations for durable medical equipment suppliers (see a future issue of Eli's Home Care Week for more details on the DME recommendations).
