Compliance:

Docs Must Get Specific With Their Length Estimate Statements

Learn from these MAC examples.

Vague wording is not going to cut it for the two-year-old requirement for the physician to include an estimate of how much longer the patient will require home health services.

So indicates HHH Medicare Administrative Contractor CGS in its recent article on the topic (see story, p. 255). The MAC’s examples of unacceptable statements are: “The patient will be on our services until the patient can walk safely” and “The patient will need home care until the wound heals.”

On the other hand, CGS offers these examples of “acceptable” statements:

  • I estimate John Doe will qualify for home health services for another 15 days.
  • I estimate John Doe will qualify for home health services for another 4 weeks.
  • I estimate John Doe will qualify for home health services until October 1, 2017.
